Smile

Smile was written, originally, as an instrumental theme by Charlie Chaplin for the film “Modern Times” in 1936. The lyrics were written in 1954 by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons.

In the final scene of “Modern Times” Charlie Chaplin and his boyish, female co star set off down the road to a new life. Charlie Chaplin pauses and turns to his co star and points to his mouth indicating that she should smile. It is thought that this scene is the inspiration for the lyrics.
